Our History
AVAA Was Formed
May 2015
During alumni weekend in 2016, the alumnae of Alden Voices met in the Taylor Room (basement of the campus center) and decided to form the Alden Voices Alumnae Association. We elected 3 board members: Caroline (Concannon) Bartlett as President, Katie Hudon as Secretary, and Eileen Wrabel as Social Chair. We also collected our first member dues.
AV/GC Moved to First Baptist Church
September 2015
The choruses had previously been rehearsing in Alden Hall (Janet Earle for the split rehearsals, and the Great Hall for the combined Festival rehearsals). However, due to the expanding music programs at WPI, space became tight in Alden Hall, so the choruses moved to the First Baptist Church (FBC) on Park Ave, behind the campus center. They rehearse in Gordon Hall and often perform in the Sanctuary. The music library is behind the stage and downstairs, the officer meetings take place in various rooms in the church, and the a cappella groups sometimes have rehearsals in the rehearsal rooms downstairs.
AV Started Assigning Bigs/Littles
2010
Amanda (Eaton) Lettiere assigned the first bigs/littles, in order to foster connection within the chorus. Many of the "founding sisters" at the top of family trees are from 2010.

Women Started Attending WPI
1968
Women started to make their presence noticed on campus in the fall of 1967, when Barbara Murphy became the first woman faculty member. In 1968, the Board of Trustees voted to admit women undergraduates, breaking WPI’s century-old tradition of an all-male student body. The first women were admitted in the fall of 1968 as commuters, as there was no female housing at the time. Lesley Small and Jayne Rosetti, both mathematics majors, were the first to enroll. The following year 24 women were admitted. While five commuted, 19 women lived on the first floor of Sanford Riley Hall.
WPI was Founded
1865
Worcester Polytechnic Institute was founded by self-made tinware manufacturer, John Boynton, and Ichabod Washburn, owner of the world’s largest wire mill. Boynton envisioned science schooling that would elevate the social position of the mechanic and manufacturer, but not necessarily teach the skills needed to become either. Washburn, on the other hand, wanted to teach technical skills through a sophisticated apprenticeship approach. Boynton consulted Seth Sweetser, a pastor, for ways to realize his vision. By chance it happened that Ichabod Washburn had previously consulted Sweetser about the proper way to actualize his own vision.[3]
